Port Captain Report October 2020

As the season comes to an end, I have had several emails about winter storage. You may know that I take pictures of all the boats that I count on the grounds at the end of the season. The winter billing season begins on November 1 (see Page 27 in the 2020 Member Handbook for more on Winter Storage dates and fees).

I will be checking and billing any boat that is on the grounds for winter storage in the first two weeks of November (see page 53, Section 8 of the EYC Bylaws). If your boat is on the grounds when I check you will be billed for the total winter storage. There will be no prorating after EYC has billed.

Port Captain Report September 2020

As the season comes to a close, there are several issues that need to be addressed in preparation for the winter storage season.

1. If you have not cleaned up under your boat, please do so. This includes picking up all plastic and metal bottle caps. Cut the grass and clean up any weeds so they don't get too large over the winter.

2. At the end of this sailing season and/or once you have pulled your boat out of the marina, if you are planning to store it on EYC grounds, please observe these guidelines:

  • Boats stored on the parking island should have their bows facing west.

  • Boats stored along the back fence should have their bows facing east.

Your name must be on trailer (part of our bylaws) and please put your OR registration numbers on the trailer, too. This keeps me from removing part of your covering to check OR numbers on the boat. This is a big problem with catamarans. If you like the way you cover your boat, having the OR numbers on the tongue of the trailer keeps me from messing that up. I will remove your tarps to find OR numbers but can not guarantee that I will replace them, so write those numbers on your trailer!

Port Captain Report August 2020

Here we are in August and the lake is in poor shape compared to last year. As we are entering into the last of this interesting sailing season, do not forget to take care of the grounds around your boat and trailer.

I would like to thank Bill and Vicky Boyce for mowing around boats that are still in the island parking area. It is nice to see that most people are pitching in and helping keep the club in great shape, especially when you consider the type of year that we are having.

On July 29, the water level was 368.92 (in the forebay) and the gauge on A Dock was at about 8 feet 5 inches. At the writing of this report (August 5), the forebay depth is 368.69, which is a loss of .23 feet in a week—almost 3 inches. As the lake gets lower, the rate will increase, so remember to watch the depth gauge and keep in mind that it is your trailer height and not your keep depth that will determine when you need to pull your boat.

One last note on the level of the lake: the depth gauge at the end of A Dock is only off by one or two inches to the toe of our ramp. Please do not run your trailer wheels off the edge of the ramp as it will degrade the toe of the ramp.

Port Captain Report July 2020

Here we are in the month of July. There are a couple of projects that need to be done. Please contact Paul Stephens or Marji Clune for the list and to schedule a time.

Also remember that you need to keep the grass under your boat and/or trailer mowed. With the dry weather we are having and projected into the future, we need to be proactive about the long grass and weeds.

If you are using someone else's slip, please contact that person before mooring your boat. There are several slips on E Dock that can be used, but if the slip has mooring line, someone is already using that slip. I know this is an obvious statement—it's just a reminder.

And last but not least, please do not call my home. That phone is rarely answered. Please call my office (541-344-1353) or my cell phone (541-913-3400) if you have moorage questions.

Be safe and and hopefully happy sailing.

Port Captain Report June 2020

As you are using your boat, please look at the hoops, hinge pins, and tie-bars for the hinges if you are on C Dock. If you see cracks or other items that need attention, please take care of them. If it is above your skill level, please contact Paul Stephens or email me and I will forward it to Paul.

I think I have taken care of all the issues with moorage for this season, but if I have missed any, please contact me. You can check your assigned moorage on the EYC website using the Members Area and clicking on Moorage. Also be aware that I will be out checking for current OR registration and will contact you if you are not up-to-date. The biggest issue will be with the Laser rack, as I have had several people requesting moorage there. If you do not wish to lose your laser rack moorage, you better get your OR numbers current. Some members have sent me scans of their temporary registration and that will work.

Port Captain Report May 2020

As we move into the summer months—and as the club gradually opens up—it will be important to keep the area around your boat clean and mowed. This applies to people who have boats on the back lot and center island, too.

If you are using a floating dock, please check your hinge pins and hair clips. The hair clips will break and can easily be replaced before the hinge pin falls out. Clips are much less expensive to replace than pins, of which we have a very limited supply. This is especially important for those with moorage on C Dock as we have replaced pins with bolts on most of the other docks.

Even though this is a slow start to the sailing season, please check that your OR registration(s) are up to date. There are several Lasers and some other boats that do not have current registration stickers, or no registration sticker at all. Remember that current registration tags are required by EYC—as well as the Sheriff.

Port Captain Report April 2020

The moorage billing is in Bookkeeper Larissa’s hands, and I hope to have the listing of names and moorage spots on the Port Captain board by the restrooms when the club opens up again.

If you have moorage billing issues, please contact me before contacting Larissa. She is only doing what I have asked her to do. This is for moorage billing issues only, of course. For service charges and other billing issues, please read and understand the billing process policy that is outlined in your Member Handbook before contacting Larissa.

Port Captain Report March 2020

You less than week or less to get your 2020 moorage request turned in. Sunday, March 15 is the deadline. Requests can be made by using the EYC website.

So far, I have received less then 50% of the moorage requests for the current year. If you haven’t made your request by March 15, you are at risk of losing your moorage spot to some of our new members who are requesting new moorage. Click below for details on how to make your moorage request.

At this writing the fill is three feet behind the fill curve target. For a good water year we need to get a about 6” of rain and the Corp to holds the water level. The long range forecast is one inch above average for March and average for April, so we may not have full pool this year.

Port Captain Report February 2020

If you haven’t already done so, please get your moorage requests for the 2020 season completed. It is all done online through the EYC website. Requests are due by March 15. There are several items that you will need to be aware of:

1) You will need the password for the Members Area to log in. If you need help with this contact Club Manager Rich Aaring.

2) The KEEP MOORAGE THE SAME form is use by all who wish to keep their current moorage or to change their moorage. If you don’t need anything changed select the YES radio button. If you want to change one or more of your moorage assignments use this form and send me a message at the bottom of the form.

3) Another option for requesting a change is to use the REQUEST TO CHANGE MOORAGE form to tell me what you would like to change or what you would like to drop from last year’s moorage. If you sold your boat please use the text field to tell me who purchase your watercraft and if it will still be on the grounds.

4) The REQUEST FOR NEW MOORAGE form is for new member moorage or new boat ownership. If this applies to you, please fill out the form completely with all the pertinent information.

Keep in mind that if you only paid for storage last year and did not pay for wet moorage you will see that your moorage spot will be row J. If this is the case you will need to complete a KEEP MOORAGE THE SAME form and select the NO radio button and then use the REQUEST TO CHANGE MOORAGE form to change moorage and you will be added to the list of new moorage for this year.

If you are a new member requesting moorage you will need to fill out the REQUEST FOR NEW MOORAGE form.

Port Captain Report January 2020

It’s Moorage Time! Get your Moorage Request Form for 2020 filled out online. Here is the link for it on the EYC website. You can also access it through the Member Area of the website. Even if you don’t want to make any changes, you must request moorage for your watercraft each year.

Your requests for moorage are due by March 15. As I always say, avoid the rush and file early! If you did not pay for your wet moorage but only for storage last year you will see that your moorage spot will be row J on the moorage map on the website. If this is the case you will need to complete a moorage request form and you will be added to the list of new moorage for this year. If you are a new member requesting moorage you will need to file out a moorage request form for new moorage.

Port Captain Report November 2019

I will be checking and billing any boats that are on the grounds for winter storage in the next week or two. Check the 2019 Member Handbook for rates on page 27 and page 70, Article 5 section 4 of the by laws. If your boat is on the grounds when I check you will be billed for the total winter storage. As in the past I am taking pictures of all boats on the grounds. There will be no prorating after EYC has billed.

If you are using EYC grounds for winter storage, cover your boat to keep it dry and safe. Make sure your name an OR numbers are on your trailer so I do not have to mess up your cover. If you park in the island, have your boat facing west, and your name and OR numbers on the tongue of your trailer. That way I will not need to remove your cover to read your OR numbers. This is a big issue with the catamarans so please check that you have your OR numbers on the trailer. EYC ground rules state that members must have their names on the tongue of trailers.

If you have sold your boat to a member and have not contacted me, you will be billed for the storage to the boat. To avoid this situation, please send me an e-mail telling me that have sold your boat and the name of the new owner.

Starting in December—or maybe a little sooner—we will start sailing Radio-controlled one meters at Golden Ponds in the Bethel area. If you are interested or have questions, feel free to contact me.

Last but not least, please check your docks and fingers to make sure that everything is still okay. It is a lot easier to do when the water is out. Also you may find that pair of pliers that you thought you had donated to the water god, and I can tell you he does not know how to take care of your tools.

Port Captain Report September 2019

There are several items that need your attention as the season comes to a close.

First, I will be checking and billing any boat that is on the grounds for winter storage in the first two weeks of November (see the 2019 Member Handbook, pages 27 and page 70). If your boat is on the grounds when I check you will be billed for the total winter storage. There will be no prorating after billing. So if I check on Saturday and you remove on Sunday, you will be billed for winter storage.

If you have not cleaned up under your boat please do so. This includes picking up all plastic and metal bottle caps. Cut the grass and clean up any weeds that may become a tree over the winter.

Port Captain Report August 2019

Here we are in August and the lake is in great shape.

As we are entering into the last of the sailing season, do not forget to take care to the grounds around your boat and trailer. Looking around last weekend, I noticed there were several places where the weeds were getting a little tall. So check where you have your trailer stored and be sure that the weeds are under control. If the Port Commission has to mow, they will bill you for that action, so be proactive and do it yourself or get a bill for mowing.

Port Captain Report July 2019

Here we are at the last month that this year’s work party hours can be performed for 2019. There are a couple of projects that need to be done. Please contact Paul Stephens or Marji Clune for the list. Also remember that you need to keep the grass under control (mowed) under your boat/trailer. With the dry weather that we are having after the rains and projected into the future we need to be proactive about the long grass and weeds.

If you are using someone else’s slip, remember to contact that person before mooring your boat. There are several slips on E Dock that can be used, but if the slip has mooring line, someone is all ready using that slip. I know that this is an obvious statement, but it is just a reminder.

Port Captain Report June 2019

Just a reminder to all trailer moorage holders to make sure that a copy of your keys are with the emergency keys box that Rich Aaring keeps in his possession. Rich, two trailer committee members, and I have finished the trailer walk-through to make sure that each trailer has a 10lb Fire extinguisher and working smoke alarm (see moorage rule 17, page 55 in the 2019 Member Handbook) and that no extension cords are inappropriately on trailer decks. (moorage rule 17.e). Trailer committee members Ken Martinson and Randy Smith were also checking that all the trailers had backflow preventers on the water systems and checking the general conditions of the trailers. They will be creating a report of the Board of their findings and contacting any owners with noted issues.

I believe I have taken care of all the issues with moorage but if I have missed any, please contact me. Moorage on the moorage board at the Yot Pot will be updated June 22, so please check after that date. Also be aware that I will be out checking for current OR registration on the Laser rack as we are receiving many requests for slips by the water. If you do not have current OR on your watercraft it will be moved to the new back rack. I am doing this as you are not using you watercraft and are using a slip of high value (see moorage rule 11:a). So if you do not wish to lose your Laser rack moorage, then get current OR numbers ASAP. I have had several people send me scans of the temporary registration and that will work. At this time there are several watercraft without current registration in the rack.

For all members with wet moorage you will see that there are new numbers that do not coincide with the map on the moorage board. This will be changing and is the reason that the last updated moorage posting is taking longer than normal. I will be fixing all of the current moorage locations with the new numbering system. I would like to thank Gary Powell for his hard work renumbering all of the docks.

Port Captain Report May 2019

The Memorial Day Regatta is coming up and I would like to request that everyone with a boat in the center parking area to get it moved in time for this regatta. If you were not planning to put your boat this weekend, please move it to the back row along the fence on the west side of the grounds.

As we move into the summer months, keep the area around your boat clean and cut the grass. This includes any and all boats on the back lot. Look for and pick up the little bits of trash that may blow into your area. If we all just pick up the little bit then no one has to pick up a lot. And it only takes a second for all of us to pick up one item and throw it away. Remember to take your empty cans and bottles home or to the recycling station next to the clubhouse.

Port Captain Report April 2019

Moorage billing is now with EYC’s bookkeeper, Larisa Worthington and you have probably received a statement by now. The list of names and moorage spots are on the Port Captain Board by the Yot Pot. These are up-to-date as of April 2. The website map is not yet updated, but will be soon. Members are changing, or moving, or adding new boat moorage at a fast clip. I will post a new moorage hard copy at the end of April. If you would like to move to a spot that you think is open, please send a request using the moorage request button on the website and I will post them in my database and contact you if it is open.

If you talk to me about moorage at the club and I ask you to send me an email about that conversation, remember that your email is necessary to make any changes. I do not keep my computer and database with me, and the database needs to be updated before it becomes a permanent record. I may not remember when someone else asks me for that same spot. Again, go to the website and make a request for a moorage change.

If you have moorage billing issues, please contact me before Larisa. She is only doing what I ask her to do. For service charges and other issues, please read and understand the billing process that are stated in the Member Handbook (available online in the Members Area) before contacting Larisa.

Port Captain Report March 2019

You have a week or less to get your moorage request in. They are due by Sunday, March 17. I have only received 50% of the moorage request for the current year, which means that new members who are seeking moorage may be very pleased with their moorage assignments thanks to the fact that you neglected to get your moorage request in by the deadline.

At this writing, the fill for the lake is ahead of target. I am looking forward to a year with good water. We just need to get a little more rain and have the Army Corps of Engineers hold the water level to be in great shape. The long-range forecast is three inches of rain above average for March and one inch above average for April, so I see no reason to not believe that we will have full pool this year.

Port Captain Report February 2019

Not sure if you’ve noticed, but we have had some rain this year. At this point, we are above the fill curve. Our best rain months for filling the lake are February, March, and April, so let’s keep doing those rain dances as there is very little snow in the mountain. While it’s true that we do not use snow melt to fill the lake, we could end up with a early draw down like last year to replace the lost of upper lakes waters for the salmon migration.

Please get your moorage requests filled out. The deadline is March 17. Once again it’s all online on the club website. Please be aware of these aspects when making your requests.
